Writing prompts that work

Good prompts read like a brief to a photographer. Cover five things and you will rarely be disappointed:

• Subject. Who or what, as specifically as you can. "A woman in a red wool coat" beats "a woman".
• Setting. Where it happens: a pale blue wall, a linen tablecloth by a window, a concrete courtyard.
• Light. Soft window light, low evening sun, a single hard light from the side. Light sets the mood more than anything else.
• Framing. Close-up, waist-up, from above at 45 degrees, wide with lots of sky.
• Feel. Editorial, candid, minimal, cinematic.

For example: "A plate of spaghetti with fresh basil on a linen tablecloth, soft window light from the left, shot from above at 45 degrees, natural and appetising."

Change one thing at a time

When an image is close but not right, change one part of the prompt and generate again. Rewriting everything at once makes it hard to learn what worked.

What it costs
