Getting natural motion

The difference between a clip that feels alive and one that feels wrong is usually the motion prompt. A few rules help.

• One main action. "She spins and her dress flares out" works better than a list of five things happening at once.
• Describe the camera separately. Slow push in, gentle pan left, handheld follow, static tripod. Saying it on its own line keeps the subject's motion and the camera's motion from blurring together.
• Match the motion to the image. A horse on a beach suits a gallop through the surf; a portrait suits a turn of the head and a smile. Motion that the image doesn't set up tends to look strange.
• Start with a clean still. A sharp image with a clear subject animates better than a busy one.

Image to video or text to video?

Start from an image when the look matters: a product, a character, a specific composition. Start from text when you are exploring ideas and any good version will do. Many people do both: generate stills with the image tool, pick the best, then animate it.

What it costs
